Choosing a paint color for your home is easier said than done. The truth is, many don't realize how many colors there actually are until they start the painting process. Here are 3 tips to help you get on track and choose colors that you'll be happy with long-term.
Start Small
If you do not know where to begin when it comes to color, start experimenting on a small scale like your bathroom or a room you do not use often, maybe even try an accent wall. Look at the process with an open mind.
To get started, select a favorite color drawn from artwork, a rug, or accessory furniture. You can really pull inspiration from anywhere.
Focus on Lighting
There is a reason why paint stores have light boxes. This is to best test paint chips.
- Natural daylight shows the truest color;
- Incandescent lighting brings out warm tones and yellows;
- Fluorescent lighting casts a sharp blue tone.
Depending on the lighting in your home the color should vary. So, a strong color may be too bright and overpowering when used on all walls or next to a large window, but it might be effective when used as an accent wall with indirect light.
Follow the Color Wheel
The color wheel is a good reference tool for modifying two or more colors. You may be surprised at how many combinations can work great together. The color wheel also illustrates the visual temperature of a color. You'll see that all the colors on the left are warm and the colors on the right are cool.
